Beautiful Day in the Bay

The area’s best dispensaries were all in attendance showcasing their best products and competing for the coveted Cannabis Cup. This years entries were incredible! I think it is safe to say that you won’t find a more impressive collection of cannabis strains at one time anywhere in the world right now, than what was on display this weekend.

Among the 1,000′s of local attendees were some of the industries leading seed breeders, glass blowers, cultivation experts and activists, who came in from all over the world to be a part of this event. It was a real sign of solidarity in the wake of all the injustices that have occurred recently in the area. Recall the raid of Oaksterdam just weeks ago that shook the community with a vulgar display of power. It didn’t break the spirits of any of us who showed up to rally around our cause.

It was an absolute honor to share a stage with some of the top minds in the industry as an expert on indoor growing. The seminar was a success! We definitely dropped some knowledge on that packed auditorium, as we touched on an array of subjects drawn from each speakers own expertise. It could have gone on all night, but we had to get off the stage so they could set up for”The Official High Times Cannabis Cup Party Presented by Cali Connection”. I have recently been hanging out with medical marijuana industry legend Paul Stanford, the Founder and President of The Hemp and Cannabis Foundation (THCF) who has helped over 150,000 patients in nine states obtain a permit to legally possess, use and grow medical marijuana.

G.Love

I recently caught up with G. Love for an exclusive backstage interview after his show at the Harmony Festival in Santa Rosa, California last month. G. Love is on the road right now promoting his latest album, Fixin’ to Die.

Before he jumped on the bus heading to his next gig, G. Love sat down with us to smoke a joint and talk about his good old days in Philadelphia.

You wanna hit this joint?

Damn, that’s nice! It reminds me of this bud I used to get back in the day when I first started smoking.

How old were you?

I was about 15 the first time. My friends and I used to hang out and skate at this old building in Philly called “The Factory.” One day, one of our boys showed up with a joint and got us all high as hell. We spent a lot of weekends there, just skating, getting stoned and listening to music.

What kind of music were you listening to back then?

I’ve always listened to a little of everything. Back then we were usually listening to either the Beastie Boys or Bob Dylan. Bob Marley’s Rastaman Vibration was always a favorite when we were smoking. Right on the inside cover it says, “This album jacket is good for cleaning herb.”

Have you ever grown your own?

When I was in high school, I grew a good-looking little plant in my bedroom window. My parents were really cool, so they let me keep it. Then one day I came home from school and it was gone. Apparently, my mom saw one of those anti-marijuana propaganda commercials on TV and freaked out. She said that she drove it like a mile away and threw it in a dumpster so I wouldn’t find it. I was bummed at the time, but then I found out later it was probably a male anyway.

What’s your preferred method of smoking?

Growing up I was always a joint smoker and never really got into bongs. As my music career started taking off and I was performing more often, I learned from a doctor that it was really bad for your voice to smoke a joint before a show. I guess it’s because the heat from the smoke irritates your vocal chords. So now I like to smoke nice, icy bong hits before shows and save the spliffs for afterwards.
